Wasted and ineffective verbiage includes cliches.  We frequently include phrases such as:

      at that point in time, at this time
      with reference to, responded re: 
      for the purpose of, in order to
      it should be noted, officer's note, please note
      contacted via telephone

Also known as wordiness, most of these ideas can be expressed in fewer words and with greater clarity.
